What is Squad Gymnastics?

Squad gymnastics is the competitive pathway of the sport. There are different types of gymnastics competitions, often called disciplines such as Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline.

Each discipline uses specific types of apparatus and a squad will then base their training around those requirements.

Here at Synergy we compete in four different disciplines; Women’s Artistic, Tumbling, Team Gym and Floor and Vault. Places in a squad are by invitation only. Read on to discover more about squad gymnastics and how to earn an invite.

Squad Overview

Competion success in 4 disciplines

Each discipline has its own pathway which enables gymnasts to develop the skills, conditioning, flexibility and resilience to fulfil their potential. Gymnasts are ID’d in our recreational programme and invited for a trial before being offered a space in a squad. You cannot book a place in a squad yourself as it is by invitation only.

Benefits of Squad Gymnastics

Our squad gymnastics programmes are designed for gymnasts who are ready to progress beyond recreational gymnastics and develop their skills through more focused, conditioning based training.

Gymnasts work on developing the strength, flexibility, body shaping and technique needed to perform more advanced skills.

From developing new skills to stepping onto the competition floor, our squad training gives gymnasts the opportunities to challenge themselves, progress and reach their potential.

If you need more help

The best way to get in touch is via email or DM us on Instagram.

No, competitive gymnastics requires a high level of dedication, commitment, physical and mental strength. For that reason coaches work hard to identify gymnasts with the right qualities to enjoy the pressures of squad gymnastics. Less than 10% of our members are enrolled in a squad.

There are no 'taster' sessions for squads however, coaches organise 'trial' periods of between one session and one month in order to assess whether a gymnast is ready to join a squad.

Yes, annual membership is required. Membership lasts for 12 months and includes membership to British Gymnastics and insurance cover. If you are joining from another club and already have BG membership we will discount the cost when joining Synergy. The membership level will depend on the level of competitions a gymnast takes part in. For lower level events Community membership (£40) is sufficient. But more advanced events require Competitive (£77) or National  (£94).

For training sessions gymnasts can wear a leotard and shorts of any make or design. Squad gymnasts are required to purchase a club tracksuit and competition leotard when they take part in events representing Synergy. These can be purchased in the online club shop on the parent portal.

Unfortunately, squad gymnastics incurs a lot of costs. On top of the monthly training fees and annual membership parents and carers need to pay for competition entries (often a minimum of £30), travel to events, accommodation if the event is outside of London and spectator entry to events. The higher the level of competition, the higher the costs. Gymnasts that get selected for regional or national squads will also need to pay for additional uniform, leotards and training camps. Gymnasts self-fund even the highest levels of International events and the costs run into thousands! Squad fees at Synergy are lower than most other clubs offering the same level of coaching however, gymnastics is an expensive sport.
